Courte biographie
Les 'Éditions du Sagittaire' ont été fondées à Paris en 1919 par Simon Kra (et dirigées plus tard par Léon Pierre-Quint). Aux côtés d''Au Sans Pareil', ce fut la maison d'édition la plus cruciale pour l'avant-garde. C'était l'éditeur officiel du mouvement surréaliste. Ils ont publié les 'Manifestes du surréalisme' (1924) d'André Breton, ainsi que ses œuvres majeures ('Nadja', 'L'Amour fou') et celles d'Éluard, Aragon, Péret et Man Ray. Ils ont également publié 'Ubu Roi' de Jarry, montrant leur lien avec les 'précurseurs' du mouvement.
Lien avec le monde du livre
Les livres du 'Sagittaire' ont défini l'esthétique surréaliste dans l'imprimerie. Leurs 'grands papiers' (éditions de luxe) contenaient des gravures originales des artistes du mouvement, tels que Max Ernst et Man Ray (qui a illustré 'Facile' avec ses photographies). Les couvertures, souvent conçues par Picabia ou Ernst, sont emblématiques.
