Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) était un artiste et écrivain français dont le talent protéiforme a profondément influencé l'avant-garde parisienne du XXe siècle. Il était à la fois poète, romancier, dramaturge, cinéaste (par ex. 'Le Sang d'un poète', 'La Belle et la Bête') et artiste visuel. Bien qu'il ait eu une relation complexe et souvent antagoniste avec les surréalistes (qui lui reprochaient d'être trop esthétique), il fut une figure centrale qui rassembla des artistes de toutes disciplines (comme Satie, Picasso et Diaghilev pour le ballet 'Parade'). Son œuvre, puisant dans le mythe, le rêve et l'inconscient, est indéniablement moderne.
