Hérold, Jacques est né le 10 octobre 1910 à Piatra Neamț, Roumanie. Après son arrivée à Paris en 1930, il a rapidement rejoint le groupe Surréaliste autour d'André Breton. Il est devenu célèbre pour ses peintures et dessins explorant les formes biométriques, le rêve et les obsessions du subconscient, en accord avec l'approche automatique et fantastique du Surréalisme. Il a participé à d'importantes expositions Surréalistes et est resté un membre fidèle du mouvement.
