Short Biography
'Éditions de la Galerie Simon' was the name under which Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler resumed his activities as an art dealer and publisher in Paris after World War I (his original gallery having been closed in 1914). Opened in 1920, the gallery was the successor to 'Galerie Kahnweiler' and once again became the epicenter of Cubism. Kahnweiler represented the 'big four': Picasso, Braque, Léger, and Juan Gris. He also published the first important works by André Masson, bridging the gap to the emerging Surrealist movement.
Connection to the Book World
This publishing house continued Kahnweiler's pioneering work in the 'livre d'artiste'. He published the most important Cubist books, such as Max Jacob's 'Le Siège de Jérusalem' (1914) with etchings by Picasso, and Apollinaire's 'L'Enchanteur pourrissant' (1909) with woodcuts by Derain (both technically pre-1920 but part of his program). He also published André Masson's first surrealist 'livre d'artiste', 'Simulacre' (1925).
