The 'Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française' (N.R.F.) was founded in 1911 by the founders of the eponymous journal (started in 1909), including André Gide and Gaston Gallimard. It quickly became the most important French publisher for modern literature (later becoming simply 'Éditions Gallimard'). They published the greatest authors of the 20th century, from Proust to Malraux. They were also a major publisher for the Surrealists, including André Breton ('Nadja', 1928) and Paul Éluard, although the relationship was often strained.

The N.R.F. produced numerous 'livres d'artiste'. Alongside their regular editions, they published 'grands papiers' (deluxe editions) of their texts, which were often illustrated with original etchings or lithographs by artists like André Masson, Max Ernst, and André Beaudin.
