'Fontaine' was a literary review, founded in 1939 in Algiers (then French Algeria) by the poet Max-Pol Fouchet. During the German occupation of France, 'Fontaine' became the most important literary voice of Free France and an intellectual center of the Resistance. It published texts by authors like Aragon, Éluard, Camus, and Gide. The 'Éditions de la Revue Fontaine' (later 'Éditions de la Revue Espace') was the publishing house linked to the review, publishing important poetry and essay collections.
Connection to the Book World
The publishing house produced books crucial to the intellectual resistance, often with a 'surrealist' sensibility. They published limited edition 'livres d'artiste'. A famous example is 'Poésie et Vérité 1942' by Paul Éluard, with a frontispiece (etching) by Pablo Picasso.
