Short Biography
The 'Éditions des Trois Collines' was founded in Geneva (Switzerland) in 1935 but reached its peak during World War II. Under the direction of François Lachenal, it became one of the most important publishers in French-speaking Europe, an 'intellectual refuge' outside of occupied France. It published the great French poets of the Resistance, including Paul Éluard (such as 'Poésie et Vérité 1942'), Louis Aragon, and Pierre Jean Jouve. The publisher was crucial for the continuity of French (and Surrealist) literature.
Connection to the Book World
The publisher produced exceptional 'livres d'artiste'. They collaborated with artists who were also in Switzerland or whose work they could obtain. Their editions of Éluard and Jouve were illustrated with original graphics (etchings, lithographs) by artists like Picasso and Matisse. Éluard's 'Vivre' (1942) with an etching by Picasso is a famous example.
