Short Biography
'Éditions du Sagittaire' was founded in Paris in 1919 by Simon Kra (and later directed by Léon Pierre-Quint). Alongside 'Au Sans Pareil', this was the most crucial publisher for the avant-garde. It was the official publisher of the Surrealist movement. They published André Breton's 'Manifestes du surréalisme' (1924), as well as his major works ('Nadja', 'L'Amour fou') and those of Éluard, Aragon, Péret, and Man Ray. They also published Jarry's 'Ubu Roi', showing their link to the movement's 'precursors'.
Connection to the Book World
The 'Sagittaire' books defined the surrealist aesthetic in printing. Their 'grands papiers' (deluxe editions) featured original graphics by the movement's artists, such as Max Ernst and Man Ray (who illustrated 'Facile' with his photographs). The covers, often designed by Picabia or Ernst, are iconic.
