Short Biography
Éditions Gallimard was founded in 1911 by Gaston Gallimard, emerging from the 'Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française' (N.R.F.). It is the most important literary publisher in France in the 20th century. They published the canon of modern French literature, including Proust, Gide, Malraux, Camus, and Sartre. They were also a major publisher for the Surrealists (Breton, Éluard, Aragon), although their relationship was complex. Gallimard is the parent company that includes the N.R.F. and the 'Bibliothèque de la Pléiade'.
Connection to the Book World
Gallimard produced numerous 'livres d'artiste' as deluxe editions ('grands papiers') of their literary publications. These editions were illustrated with original etchings and lithographs by the greatest artists of the 'École de Paris', including André Masson, Max Ernst, and Alberto Giacometti.
