Éditions Rombaldi was a French publishing house, founded in Paris in 1920 by Hector Rombaldi. They became very popular in the mid-20th century (1940s-60s) for their 'subscription series' of literary classics. These were deluxe, yet mass-produced, books, often in uniform bindings. They were not an avant-garde publisher, but they made the illustrated book accessible to a wider, bourgeois audience.
Connection to the Book World
Rombaldi collaborated with many popular 'École de Paris' artists to illustrate their books, including Raoul Dufy, André Dignimont, and Bernard Buffet. The illustrations were often color lithographs or reproduced watercolors (pochoir). Their editions were a step between the mass-market book and the exclusive 'livre d'artiste'.
