Short Biography
The 'Éditions Surréalistes' (also 'Librairie José Corti' for distribution) was the official publishing house of the Surrealist movement, founded in Paris in 1926. It was under the direct control of André Breton and succeeded 'Éditions du Sagittaire' as the group's primary publication channel. The publisher issued the movement's most important theoretical and poetic works, including Breton's 'Le Surréalisme et la Peinture' (1928) and 'Second Manifeste du surréalisme' (1930), as well as works by Aragon, Éluard, and Crevel.
Connection to the Book World
This publishing house produced the 'livres d'artiste' that defined the Surrealist aesthetic. The deluxe editions ('grands papiers') of their publications featured original etchings, photographs, and drawings by artists like Max Ernst, Man Ray, and Pablo Picasso.
