Éluard, Paul
Great French poet, co-founder of Surrealism, known for his lyrical poetry on love and freedom.
Short Biography
Paul Éluard (pseudonym of Eugène Grindel, 1895-1952) was one of the most celebrated French poets of the 20th century. He was a founding member of the Dada movement in Paris and then one of the pillars of Surrealism, alongside his friend André Breton. His poetry, such as 'Capitale de la douleur' (1926), is considered the most lyrical and accessible of the movement. He later broke with Breton over political differences and became a major figure in the communist Resistance during WWII, famous for his poem 'Liberté'.
Connection to the Book World
Éluard's poetry was the basis for some of the most important 'livres d'artiste' of Surrealism. He collaborated with Max Ernst ('Répétitions', 1922; 'Les Malheurs des immortels'), Man Ray ('Facile', 1935, featuring photos of Nusch Éluard), and Pablo Picasso (who illustrated many of his war and post-war poems). These books, published by Au Sans Pareil, Sagittaire, and later Tériade, are iconic collaborations.
