Alechinsky, Pierre

Pierre Alechinsky is an influential Belgian artist and graphic designer associated with the CoBrA movement.

Short Biography

Pierre Alechinsky was born on October 19 1927 in Brussels Belgium. As a painter and graphic artist he played a crucial role within the CoBrA avant-garde movement which he joined in 1949. After the group disbanded in 1951 he moved to Paris where he further developed his style influenced by figures like Stanley William Hayter. His work combines influences from Expressionism and Surrealism often characterized by spontaneous brushwork and a fascination with Eastern calligraphy which he studied in Japan in 1955. He is known for his 'remarques marginales' drawings in the margins surrounding a central image functioning like a comic strip. Alechinsky's art is defined by lyrical abstraction and a world full of fantasy creatures and organic forms making him one of the last great figures of the post-war European avant-garde.

Connection to the Book World

Alechinsky's training in typography and book illustration at La Cambre laid the foundation for his extensive graphic work. He studied printing techniques in Paris with Stanley William Hayter producing many etchings and lithographs. He frequently collaborated with writers and poets such as Christian Dotremont and Michel Butor illustrating numerous avant-garde editions.
