Appel, Karel
Dutch painter and sculptor, co-founder of CoBrA.
Short Biography
Karel Appel was a leading postwar artist whose vigorous brushwork and spontaneous imagery broke with academic convention. A co-founder of CoBrA, he promoted collective experimentation, material freedom, and childlike directness. Active in painting, sculpture, and printmaking, he gained an international audience through galleries, printers, and publishers. His graphic suites and artists’ books, driven by color and gesture, broadened postwar European avant-garde discourse.
