Arland, Marcel
French novelist, literary critic, and influential editor of La Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF).
Short Biography
Marcel Arland was born in 1899 in Varennes-sur-Amance. As a young writer in Paris after World War I, he became involved with the early avant-garde and was briefly associated with the Dada movement. However, he soon turned away from Dada's nihilism and the emerging Surrealism. Arland developed a more subdued, psychological, and classical literary style. He became one of the pillars of La Nouvelle Revue Française (NRF), where, as a critic from 1925 and later as (co-)director (1953-1977), he left his mark on French literature, often as a counterweight to the more radical movements. He won the Prix Goncourt in 1929 for 'L'Ordre'.
Connection to the Book World
Although Arland was not a visual artist himself, he played a role in publishing on art through the NRF. The NRF and Gallimard, the publisher behind it, released books that were sometimes illustrated by modern artists, although Arland's personal taste leaned more traditional than towards the experiments of the Surrealists.
