Rassenfosse, Armand

Short Biography
Armand Rassenfosse (1862-1934) was an artist from Liège who played a crucial role in Belgian graphic arts. Although largely self-taught, he became a master engraver and lithographer. He had a close friendship and collaboration with Félicien Rops, with whom he refined technical processes. Rassenfosse's work is strongly associated with Symbolism and Art Nouveau. He was known for his sensual, poetic depictions of women and his posters. He collaborated with the well-known Liège printer-publisher Auguste Bénard.

Rassenfosse was an innovator in graphic techniques, particularly 'vernis mou' (soft-ground) etching. He illustrated numerous books for bibliophiles, including Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du Mal', which is considered one of his masterpieces in book illustration.
