Noël Arnaud (1919-2003) was a French writer deeply rooted in the 20th-century avant-garde. During the German occupation, he was the driving force behind 'La Main à plume', a Parisian surrealist group that kept the movement's ideology alive. After the war, he was involved with the 'surréaliste-révolutionnaire' group. Arnaud's interests were broad; he was also a prominent member of the Collège de 'Pataphysique (a pseudo-philosophy with roots in Dadaism) and later a founding member of the influential literary group Oulipo (Ouvroir de littérature potentielle) in 1960, alongside Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais.
