Artaud, Antonin
French poet, theatre theorist, and actor, known for the 'Theatre of Cruelty' and his role in Surrealism.
Short Biography
Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) was a French writer, poet, actor, and theatre director. He was a passionate and radical figure in the 1920s Parisian avant-garde. He joined the Surrealist movement and, for a time, directed the 'Bureau of Surrealist Research'. Artaud's vision of art was absolute and spiritual, which eventually brought him into conflict with the more politically-oriented André Breton, leading to his exclusion in 1926. His most influential work, 'Le Théâtre et son double' (1938), laid the groundwork for the 'Theatre of Cruelty', a concept that would profoundly influence Western theatre practice. His life was marked by severe mental health issues and confinements.
Connection to the Book World
Artaud collaborated with artists for the illustration of his texts, although his own drawings and 'written-drawings' (created during his confinement in Rodez) were later recognized as significant graphic works in their own right. An early collaboration was 'L'Ombilic des Limbes' (1925), with a portrait by André Masson. His texts were often published by avant-garde publishers like GLM (Guy Lévis Mano).
