The publishing house 'Au Sans Pareil' was founded in Paris in 1919 by René Hilsum. It played a crucial role in launching avant-garde literature after World War I. 'Au Sans Pareil' was the very first publisher of the Dada movement in Paris, publishing key texts by Tristan Tzara, André Breton, Paul Éluard, and Philippe Soupault (including 'Les Champs magnétiques', the first automatic writing text). As Dada transitioned into Surrealism, the publisher remained central, publishing the first major works of the Surrealist movement, such as Breton's 'Manifeste du surréalisme' (1924). The publishing house ceased its activities in 1936.

'Au Sans Pareil' was a pioneer in the avant-garde 'livre d'artiste'. They published books with original graphics by artists closely associated with the writers. An iconic example is 'Les Champs magnétiques' (1920) by Breton and Soupault, and 'Répétitions' (1922) by Paul Éluard, illustrated with drawings by Max Ernst.
