Short Biography
Georges Aubert (1866-1961) was a highly skilled French wood engraver. Although his personal style was rather traditional (he exhibited in the official Salons), his technical mastery was crucial for the avant-garde. He became the favored 'graveur d'interprétation' (an engraver who cuts another artist's design into wood) for the great Parisian publishers of 'livres d'artiste', most notably Ambroise Vollard. Aubert translated the drawings of artists like Pablo Picasso, André Masson, Raoul Dufy, and Marc Chagall into wood engravings, capturing their modern lines in the classic medium of book illustration.
Connection to the Book World
Aubert's most famous and time-consuming work was the execution of the 135 wood engravings after Picasso's drawings for Balzac's 'Le Chef-d'œuvre inconnu', published by Vollard in 1931. This book is considered a milestone in the Cubist 'livre d'artiste'. He also worked on Surrealist texts, engraving André Masson's drawings for 'Sacrifice' (1936) and texts by René Crevel.
