Bazaine, Jean

Short Biography
Jean Bazaine (1904-2001) was a French artist and art writer. After an early figurative period, his work evolved after World War II into a highly personal form of abstraction. He became one of the most important representatives of the 'Nouvelle École de Paris' and 'abstraction lyrique' (Lyrical Abstraction). His style, which is related to Art Informel, is not purely non-figurative but seeks the abstract essence of nature, particularly light and water, through a mosaic-like structure of color and line. He also created monumental works, such as stained-glass windows.
Connection to the Book World
Bazaine was very active in the 'livre d'artiste', collaborating with poets who shared his sensibility, such as André Frénaud and Jean Tardieu. He primarily used color lithography to transfer the vibrant, luminous qualities of his paintings onto the printed page. His work for 'Vollard' or 'Kahnweiler' is less prominent, as he belonged to a later generation that worked mainly with publishers like Maeght.
