Bellmer, Hans
German-French artist, photographer, and writer, famous for his fetishistic and distorted 'Doll' sculptures.
Short Biography
Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) was born in Kattowitz (then Germany, now Poland). In 1933, reacting against the rise of Nazism, he began constructing his first 'Doll' (Die Poupée), a life-sized, anatomically distorted sculpture of a young girl. He photographed this doll in a series of provocative and disturbing scenes. These photographs were noticed by the Paris Surrealists, and Bellmer, who fled to Paris in 1938, was enthusiastically welcomed by André Breton. His work, obsessively exploring themes of eroticism, desire, and the deconstruction of the body, is considered one of the most radical and unique contributions to Surrealism.
Connection to the Book World
Bellmer was a master printmaker, whose primary technique was etching. His linework is extremely fine and nervous. He produced several important illustrated books, often for avant-garde publishers like GLM or Le Terrain Vague. His best-known graphic works are the illustrations for 'Histoire de l'œil' (Georges Bataille) and 'The Man of Jasmine' (Unica Zürn), visually reinforcing the texts' erotic and subversive nature.
