Short Biography
Gus Bofa (born Gustave Blanchot, 1883-1968) was a French artist and writer. He began his career as an illustrator for satirical magazines like 'Le Rire'. After fighting in World War I, his work took on a deeper, more cynical, and philosophical tone, often featuring themes of death and existential angst. Although he operated outside major -isms like Cubism or Surrealism, his style is recognized as unique and influential. He founded the 'Salon de l'Araignée' (1920-1930), which provided a platform for independent draftsmen.

His books, such as 'Malaises' (1930) or 'Zoo' (1935), combine text and image in an integral way, with his sharp line drawings and lithographs providing dark commentary.
