Boumeester, Christine
Dutch-French abstract artist and printmaker, active in Surrealist circles in Paris.
Short Biography
Christine Boumeester (1904-1971) was born in the Dutch East Indies and moved to Paris in 1935. There, along with her husband, the painter Henri Goetz, she joined the avant-garde. She came into contact with Hans Hartung and Vassily Kandinsky and co-founded the surrealist review 'La Main à plume' in 1935 during the Occupation. Her early work is distinctly surrealist and automatic. After the war, her style evolved towards a more lyrical and poetic abstraction, related to the 'Nouvelle École de Paris'.
Connection to the Book World
Boumeester was an accomplished printmaker, mastering etching and aquatint. She illustrated numerous books and poetry collections, often in collaboration with her husband Henri Goetz. Her graphic work shows the same evolution as her paintings, moving from surrealist, dreamlike images to abstract compositions of light and line.
