Short Biography
Georges Braque (1882-1963) was a French artist who played a fundamental role in 20th-century art. He began as one of the 'Fauves', but his work took a radical turn after seeing Picasso's 'Les Demoiselles d'Avignon' and the work of Cézanne. From 1908 to 1914, he developed Cubism alongside Picasso, deconstructing objects and showing them from multiple viewpoints simultaneously. After World War I, he developed a more personal, poetic style focusing on still lifes and interiors, becoming a celebrated master of the 'École de Paris'.
Connection to the Book World
Braque was an extremely important innovator of the 'livre d'artiste'. He collaborated with publishers like Kahnweiler and Tériade and poets like René Char and Pierre Reverdy. His illustrations, often etchings or lithographs, are not literal translations of the text but rather 'accompaniments' in a similar poetic key. A high point is his 'Theogony' by Hesiod (1955), published by Vollard, with etchings that perfectly blend his classical and modern sensibilities.
