Brassaï

Hungarian-French photographer, sculptor, and writer, famous for his nocturnal photographs of Paris.

Short Biography

Brassaï (born Gyula Halász, 1899-1984) arrived in Paris in 1924 and became one of the city's most iconic photographers. He is best known for his book 'Paris de Nuit' (1933), which captured the nightlife, the underworld, and the poetry of the city at night. Brassaï had close ties to the Surrealist movement and published regularly in their magazine 'Minotaure'. He photographed the 'invisible' aspects of the city, which perfectly aligned with the Surrealist fascination for the hidden and the unconscious. He was also a friend of Picasso, about whom he wrote an important book.

Connection to the Book World

Brassaï's 'Paris de Nuit' (1933), with a text by Paul Morand and published by Tériade, is a milestone in the history of the photographic book. His photos for 'Minotaure' (publisher Skira) illustrated texts by Breton and Dalí. He also collaborated with Jacques Prévert on 'Le Grand Bal du Printemps' (1951). Brassaï's work demonstrated that photography was as powerful a medium as etching or lithography for the 'livre d'artiste'.
