Breton, André

French writer and poet, the principal founder and theorist of Surrealism.

Short Biography

André Breton (1896-1966) was a French writer who defined the course of 20th-century art and literature. After a brief but intense involvement with the Dada movement in Paris (around 1920), he broke away and formalized his own ideas. In 1924, he published the 'Manifeste du surréalisme' (Surrealist Manifesto), officially launching the Surrealist movement. As the 'pope of Surrealism', he was its central figure, theorist, and organizer, championing concepts like 'automatic writing', the dream, and 'l'amour fou' (mad love). He continued to lead the movement until his death.

Connection to the Book World

Breton's texts were the catalyst for some of the most important 'livres d'artiste' of the 20th century. Publishers like Au Sans Pareil (for early Dada/Surrealist texts) and Skira (for 'Minotaure') were crucial. His books were illustrated by the movement's greatest artists, including Max Ernst ('Les Malheurs des immortels'), André Masson ('Martinique, charmeuse de serpents'), and Joan Miró ('L'Air de l'eau'). These collaborations were not illustrations, but 'encounters' between poet and artist.
