Camacho, Jorge

Short Biography
Jorge Camacho (1934-2011) was a Cuban-French artist. Born in Havana, he moved to Paris in 1959, where he was quickly integrated into the Surrealist group surrounding André Breton. He remained faithful to the movement until the end and is considered one of the most important 'late' Surrealists. His work is extremely precise and refined, yet simultaneously disturbing and macabre. He developed a unique iconography inspired by alchemy, pre-Columbian myths, and nature (especially birds), resulting in 'ornitho-hommes' (bird-men).

Camacho was a master etcher and a prolific illustrator of 'livres d'artiste'. His graphic work perfectly aligns with the dark, poetic atmosphere of surrealist writers.
