Short Biography
Marc Chagall (1887-1985) was a Russian-Jewish artist who became a naturalized French citizen and one of the 20th century's most beloved masters. He was a key figure of the 'École de Paris'. While he absorbed influences from Fauvism and Cubism, his style was entirely unique, characterized by a dreamlike, poetic, and mystical imagery that drew from his Jewish heritage and Russian folklore. André Breton praised him as a natural surrealist ('surréaliste à l'état pur'), although Chagall never formally joined the movement.
Connection to the Book World
Chagall was one of the greatest masters of the 'livre d'artiste'. The publisher Ambroise Vollard gave him three monumental commissions: Gogol's 'Les Âmes mortes' (etchings, begun 1923), La Fontaine's 'Fables' (etchings, begun 1925), and 'The Bible' (etchings, begun 1931). These projects were ultimately published by Tériade (who also issued the famous color lithographs for 'Daphnis et Chloé'). Chagall's use of etching and later color lithography set a standard for 20th-century book illustration.
