Great French poet and Resistance hero, briefly linked to Surrealism and known for his dense, oracular poetry.
Short Biography
René Char (1907-1988) was one of the most celebrated French poets of the 20th century. Between 1930 and 1934, he was an active and important member of the Surrealist movement in Paris, befriending Breton and Éluard. However, he broke with the group to follow his own path. During WWII, he was a legendary leader in the French Resistance ('Capitaine Alexandre'). After the war, his poetry, characterized by a dense, fragmentary, and oracular style (e.g., 'Fureur et Mystère'), was widely admired and reflects his experiences and his deep connection to the landscape of Provence.
Connection to the Book World
Char was the 'poet of painters'. He maintained deep friendships with artists, and his work was the basis for many exceptional 'livres d'artiste'. He collaborated with Georges Braque, Joan Miró ('L'Air de l'eau'), Nicolas de Staël, and Maria Helena Vieira da Silva. These books, often published by Tériade, Maeght, or GLM, are not 'illustrations' but true dialogues between the artist's etchings or lithographs and Char's poetry.
