Jean Cocteau (1889-1963) was a French artist and writer whose multifaceted talent profoundly influenced the 20th-century avant-garde in Paris. He was a poet, novelist, playwright, filmmaker (e.g., 'The Blood of a Poet', 'Beauty and the Beast'), and visual artist. Although he had a complex and often antagonistic relationship with the Surrealists (who accused him of being too aesthetic), he was a central figure who brought together artists from all disciplines (like Satie, Picasso, and Diaghilev for the ballet 'Parade'). His work, drawing on myth, dream, and the unconscious, is unmistakably modern.
