Coquiot, Gustave
French art critic and writer, an early and important supporter of modern artists like Picasso and Utrillo.
Short Biography
Gustave Coquiot (1865-1926) was a French writer, playwright, and one of the most influential art critics in Paris at the turn of the 20th century. He was an early and vocal defender of the Montmartre avant-garde. He was among the first to recognize the genius of Pablo Picasso during his Blue and Rose periods and wrote the first monographs on artists like Maurice Utrillo and Auguste Rodin. He served as Rodin's secretary and was a close friend to many artists, including those of the 'École de Paris'.
Connection to the Book World
Coquiot's books on artists were often the first important 'livres d'artiste' about them. His monograph on Utrillo contained original graphics by the artist. He also collaborated with André Derain on the illustration of Apollinaire's 'L'Enchanteur pourrissant' (1909), though that edition was published by Kahnweiler. His own texts, such as 'Le Veilleur de nuit' (1907), were illustrated by artists like Juan Gris, demonstrating his central role in Cubist circles.
