Henri Creuzevault (1905-1971) was a pivotal figure in the Parisian art world. He began his career as one of the most innovative and respected bookbinders of his time, whose bindings were considered sculptural artworks in themselves. After the war, he opened a gallery and became one of the most important publishers of 'livres d'artiste'. He collaborated with the greatest artists of the 'École de Paris', including Giacometti, Miró, and de Staël. Creuzevault combined his unparalleled sense of typography, paper, and binding with the most cutting-edge art.
Connection to the Book World
Creuzevault's publications are among the absolute pinnacles of 20th-century bibliophily. He was not just a publisher, but the director of the entire book. A famous example is 'Paroles Peintes' (1962), a collaboration between Giacometti and the poet Michel Leiris, where Giacometti's etchings perfectly harmonize with the text. His editions show an ultimate refinement in the integration of original graphics (etchings, lithographs) and the book as an object.
