Short Biography
Sonia Delaunay (born Sarah Stern, 1885-1979) was a Ukrainian-French artist. With her husband, Robert Delaunay, she developed Orphism (a branch of Cubism), focusing on pure abstraction and the dynamic interaction of color ('Simultaneism'). Unlike many of her male colleagues, Delaunay applied her radical abstract style not only to canvas but also to textiles, fashion, and design, breaking the boundaries between 'high' and 'applied' art. She was a central figure in the Parisian avant-garde.
Connection to the Book World
Delaunay's contribution to the 'livre d'artiste' is fundamental. Her masterpiece is 'La Prose du Transsibérien et de la petite Jehanne de France' (1913) by Blaise Cendrars, a two-meter-long 'simultaneous' book that integrates text and her 'pochoir' (stencil) illustrations into a dynamic whole. This book is considered one of the earliest and most radical examples of the modern artist's book.
