Delstanche, Albert
Belgian painter and engraver, known for his landscapes and city views, working in a post-symbolist style.
Short Biography
Albert Delstanche (1870-1941) was a Belgian artist, born in Brussels. A pupil of Jean-François Portaels, he excelled as a painter, but above all as an etcher. His work, primarily landscapes and cityscapes of Brabant and Bruges, is characterized by a subdued, poetic atmosphere that builds on Symbolism and Luminism. Although a contemporary of early Expressionism (like that of Laethem-Saint-Martin), his style remained more traditional and refined.

Delstanche was a master etcher and his work was very well suited for book illustration. He illustrated books by Belgian authors, such as 'The Towns with Gables' (Les Villes à pignons) by Emile Verhaeren. His graphic work, mainly etchings, is technically virtuosic and captures the melancholic atmosphere of Belgian cities and landscapes.
