Derain, André
French artist, co-founder of Fauvism and an early pioneer of Cubism, who later returned to a classical style.
Short Biography
André Derain (1880-1954) was a French painter and sculptor. He was a key figure in two major avant-garde movements. With Matisse, he co-founded Fauvism (1905), known for its radical, non-naturalistic use of color. Shortly thereafter, influenced by Cézanne and Picasso, he played a crucial role in the early development of Cubism. After WWI, however, he rejected these modernisms for a 'return to order', a neo-classical style that made him popular but alienated him from the later avant-garde.
Connection to the Book World
Derain was a major creator of 'livres d'artiste'. His first and most radical contribution was the woodcuts for Apollinaire's 'L'Enchanteur pourrissant' (1909), published by Kahnweiler. This is considered the first Cubist 'livre d'artiste'. Later, in his classical period, he illustrated 'Satyricon' (1951) for Vollard, with woodcuts that show his interest in classical antiquity.
