Desnos, Robert
Influential French surrealist poet, known for his 'sleeping-fits' and automatism, who died in a concentration camp.
Short Biography
Robert Desnos (1900-1945) was a French poet and a central figure in the early Surrealist movement. He pioneered 'automatic writing' and became famous for his 'sleeping-fits' (sommeils hypnotiques) during which he would utter poetry and predictions. He was one of the most talented and admired poets in Breton's circle. However, he broke with Breton in 1929. During WWII, he was active in the Resistance, was arrested, and died in the Theresienstadt concentration camp in 1945, shortly after its liberation.

Desnos's early poetry was published in 'livres d'artiste' that captured the essence of Surrealism. His work 'Deuil pour deuil' (1924) was illustrated by André Masson. He also collaborated with Man Ray (for 'L'Étoile de mer') and Picasso. His most famous illustrated work is perhaps 'Corps et biens' (1930), which summarizes his surrealist period.
