Dominguez, Oscar

Spanish surrealist artist, known for his invention of 'decalcomania' (transfer technique) and his volcanic imagery.

Short Biography

Oscar Dominguez (1906-1957) was a Spanish artist, born in Tenerife, who settled in Paris in 1927. He joined André Breton's Surrealist group in 1934. His most important contribution to the movement was the invention of 'decalcomania without a preconceived object', an automatic technique involving pressing wet paint between paper, which creates organic, rock-like textures. His work, influenced by Picasso and the landscapes of Tenerife, is dark, volcanic, and violent. He committed suicide in 1957.

Connection to the Book World

Dominguez was a powerful printmaker, primarily an etcher. He illustrated several 'livres d'artiste' for surrealist poets, including 'Gisants' (1938) by Paul Éluard. His etchings, often using deep blacks and nervous lines, translate the explosive energy of his paintings into the graphic medium.
