Short Biography
Luis Miguel Dominguín (1926-1996) was a legendary Spanish 'torero' (bullfighter) in the 1940s and 1950s. He was a charismatic and flamboyant figure, famous both in the bullring and in the 'jet set'. His connection to the avant-garde is his close friendship with Pablo Picasso, who was fascinated by bullfighting (tauromachy). Their friendship and Dominguín's rivalry with Antonio Ordoñez were chronicled by Ernest Hemingway in 'The Dangerous Summer'.
Connection to the Book World
Dominguín was the subject of, and inspiration for, important 'livres d'artiste' dedicated to tauromachy. Picasso illustrated the text 'Toros y Toreros' (1961), published by Cercle d'Art, which gives deep insight into the world of his friend Dominguín, featuring lithographs and drawings of the bullfight.
