Short Biography
Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) was a French (later American) artist whose work radically changed 20th-century art. He began as a painter aligned with Cubism ('Nude Descending a Staircase', 1912). He soon rejected 'retinal' (visual) art and became the central figure of the New York Dada group. With his 'readymades' (like 'Fountain', 1917), he introduced the idea that the artist's choice and concept are more important than the execution. He was
closely associated with the Surrealists, who saw him as a major precursor.
Connection to the Book World
Duchamp's contribution to the book was conceptual. His 'Boîte-en-valise' (Box in a Valise, from 1935) was a portable museum in a box, containing reproductions and miniatures of his work. He designed the catalogs for Surrealist exhibitions, such as the 'Dictionnaire abrégé du surréalisme' (1938). His graphic work was often a reproduction of his concepts.
