Short Biography
Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) was a French artist. He was a key figure of Fauvism, where he developed a light, elegant, and decorative style. His work is characterized by a rapid, calligraphic line, often detached from the bright color fields. After a brief Cubist phase, he focused on scenes of regattas, concerts, and the Riviera. He was also an influential designer of textiles and ceramics. He was a beloved member of the 'École de Paris'.
Connection to the Book World
Dufy was an extremely important illustrator. His woodcuts for Apollinaire's 'Le Bestiaire' (1911), commissioned by Kahnweiler, are a masterpiece of early modern graphics. Later, he illustrated numerous books for Vollard and Tériade, translating his light, rapid style into etchings and lithographs for texts by Colette and Brillat-Savarin.
