Duthuit, Georges

French art historian and critic, son-in-law of Henri Matisse, and an important proponent of 'Art Informel'.

Short Biography

Georges Duthuit (1891-1973) was a French art critic, Byzantinist, and writer. He married Marguerite Matisse, the daughter of Henri Matisse, and became a leading expert on his father-in-law's work. After World War II, however, Duthuit became one of the most eloquent defenders of post-war abstraction. He was an early champion of Nicolas de Staël and the Art Informel movement (like Riopelle and Bram van Velde). He was the founder of the influential avant-garde journal 'transition'.

Connection to the Book World

Duthuit was the author of the catalogue raisonné of Matisse's graphic work. As a writer, he collaborated with artists on 'livres d'artiste'. A famous example is 'Miroir du Tagueur' (1960), illustrated with lithographs by Jean-Paul Riopelle.
