Short Biography
Éditions Cahiers d'Art was founded in Paris in 1926 by the Greek critic Christian Zervos. It was both a magazine and a publishing house and became the most authoritative voice in promoting modern art (especially Cubism and Surrealism) in the interwar period. The magazine was famous for its sober layout, high-quality photography, and texts by the artists themselves. Zervos was a close friend of Picasso, and his publishing house is most famous for publishing the 'Zervos' catalogue, the monumental catalogue raisonné of Picasso's work.
Connection to the Book World
Cahiers d'Art published important 'livres d'artiste'. A high point is Buffon's 'Histoire Naturelle' (1942), illustrated with 31 aquatints by Picasso, commissioned by Vollard but published by Zervos's partner, Martin Fabiani. The magazine issues themselves often contained original lithographs (such as by Miró or Ernst) and are highly sought after.
