Dulac, Edmond
French-British 'Golden Age' illustrator, known for his exotic and fairy-tale watercolors.
Short Biography
Edmond Dulac (1882-1953) was a French, later naturalized British, illustrator. He moved to London in 1904 and became, alongside Arthur Rackham, one of the most prominent figures of the 'Golden Age of Illustration'. His style, influenced by Symbolism, Art Nouveau, and Eastern art (Persian miniatures), is extremely refined, poetic, and exotic. He was renowned for his masterful use of watercolor and his ability to create a magical, dreamlike atmosphere.
Connection to the Book World
Dulac's career was defined by the deluxe illustrated book. He became famous for his illustrations for 'Arabian Nights' (1907), 'The Tempest' (1908), and Andersen's fairy tales. His watercolors were reproduced using the latest four-color printing techniques and 'tipped-in' to bibliophile editions. He also designed stamps and banknotes.
