Donati, Enrico
Italian-American surrealist artist, closely associated with Breton in New York and nicknamed 'the last surrealist'.
Short Biography
Enrico Donati (1909-2008) was an Italian-American artist. Born in Milan, he moved to the US in 1934. In the 1940s in New York, he became closely associated with the émigré Surrealists, particularly André Breton and Marcel Duchamp. He participated in their exhibitions (like 'First Papers of Surrealism', 1942) and became an important member of the group. His work, often taking on organic and fossil-like forms, bridges the gap between late, material Surrealism and the emerging Abstract Expressionism. He is often called 'the last surrealist'.

Donati contributed to surrealist publications and 'livres d'artiste'. He designed the catalog cover for 'Le Surréalisme en 1947' (published by Maeght) in collaboration with Duchamp. His graphic work, etchings and lithographs, translates his tactile, organic painting style to the printed page.
