Ensor, James

Short Biography
James Ensor (1860-1949) was a Belgian artist from Ostend. Although he began with a realistic style, in the 1880s he developed a radically personal and unique visual language. He is considered a crucial precursor to 20th-century Expressionism and Surrealism. He is famous for his paintings and etchings of carnival masks, skeletons, and grotesque, satirical scenes (like 'Christ's Entry Into Brussels'). As a member of 'Les XX', he was a key figure in the Belgian avant-garde.
Connection to the Book World
Ensor was a master etcher. His graphic work, which he often printed himself and colored by hand, was essential for disseminating his unique vision. He 'illustrated' his own world, although bibliophile editions of his etchings also exist. His prints were a direct source of inspiration for the German Expressionists of 'Die Brücke' and the Belgian Surrealists.
