Short Biography
Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a German (later naturalized French and American) artist. He was one of the most influential figures of the 20th-century avant-garde. He founded the Cologne Dada group and, after moving to Paris in 1922, was a founding member of Surrealism. He was a tireless inventor of techniques to tap into the subconscious, including 'frottage' (rubbing), 'grattage' (scraping), and 'decalcomania'. His work, filled with bird-men, primeval forests, and apocalyptic visions, is iconic of Surrealism.

Ernst was a revolutionary in the 'livre d'artiste'. He created the first 'collage-novels' ('La Femme 100 têtes', 1929; 'Une Semaine de bonté', 1934), which changed the structure of the book. He was the favored illustrator of Paul Éluard ('Répétitions', 1922) and André Breton. He worked with all the major publishers (Au Sans Pareil, Sagittaire, Tériade, GLM) and used collage, frottage, and etching to perfectly accompany the surrealist text.
