Short Biography
Léon-Paul Fargue (1876-1947) was a French poet and prose writer. He began his career in Symbolist circles, as a friend of Jarry and Mallarmé. He was a central figure in the Parisian literary world, a 'flâneur' who captured the atmosphere of the city in his poetry ('Poèmes', 1912) and prose ('Le Piéton de Paris'). Although he never formally belonged to a movement, he was greatly admired by the Surrealists (Breton cited him) and was a key figure in the 'École de Paris', befriended by artists like Picasso and Braque.
Connection to the Book World
Fargue's poetic and atmospheric texts were highly sought after for 'livres d'artiste'. He collaborated with many artists, including André Beaudin and Marc Chagall. A famous example is 'Poèmes' (1939), illustrated with etchings by Georges Braque, published by Gallimard (N.R.F.).
