Short Biography
Fernand Léger (1881-1955) was a French painter, sculptor, and filmmaker. He was a central figure in the development of Cubism. He created a unique, personal style known as 'Tubism', constructing figures and objects from cylindrical, machine-like forms. Unlike Picasso and Braque, he used bright, primary colors (influenced by Orphism). His work celebrates the modern, industrial world, the machine, and the common man. He was also an influential teacher and muralist.

Léger was a major innovator of the 'livre d'artiste'. His masterpiece is 'La Fin du Monde filmée par l'Ange N.D.' (1919) by Blaise Cendrars, a groundbreaking book combining typography and pochoir illustrations. He also worked for Kahnweiler ('Lunes en papier', 1921) and later Tériade ('Cirque', 1950), translating his powerful, graphic style into woodcuts and color lithographs.
