Short Biography
The 'Fondation Maeght' is a private museum of modern and contemporary art, opened in 1964 in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, France. It was founded by the visionary publisher and gallery owner Aimé Maeght and his wife Marguerite. The building itself, designed by Josep Lluís Sert, is an artwork that perfectly integrates the collection (including masterpieces by Miró, Giacometti, Chagall, Léger) with the architecture and nature. It is one of the most important cultural institutions of the 20th century, an offshoot of the 'Galerie Maeght' in Paris.
Connection to the Book World
As a continuation of the 'Galerie Maeght' (founded 1945), the Fondation is the custodian of Maeght's publishing legacy. Aimé Maeght was, after Vollard and Tériade, the most important publisher of 'livres d'artiste'. He published 'Derrière le Miroir' (DLM), a journal-catalog featuring original lithographs by Miró, Chagall, Braque, Alechinsky, and Tàpies, printed by Mourlot and Arte.
